In 1911, her older brother Robert Thomas purchased an acre and a half plot of land on Arnold Mill Road. Magnolia and her mother Caroline moved into the house at 108 Arnold Mill Road, which was only a block away from the Training School. Her home was rebuilt by the City of Woodstock, and converted to a restaurant named in her honor. Tragically, it was lost to a fire in 2008, but a reconstruction of the original home still sits at the site today. Chamblee Street, later renamed Burge Street in honor of educators J.A. and Marie Burge, and the streets of Teasley and Roy make up the rest of Stumptown. Jefferson Circle, named for community member Fred Jefferson, was later added to the Stumptown community with the addition of a housing development.

At one time Stumptown had its own elementary school for grades one through seven, after which students attended high school in the Pea Ridge community, many of them walking the route daily in order to attend.

The residents of Stumptown played a significant role in the integration of Canton schools in the mid-1960s. The three Durham children all transferred from Ralph Bunche in 1965, Cynthia Anne to Cherokee High School, her brother Chuck and sister Shirley to Canton Elementary, both previously all-white schools. Frankie Ferguson Shepherd, who was a pre-integration graduate of Ralph Bunche, was its first Black woman principal post-integration.

In 1981, Charlie and Tony Ferguson, a\nfather and son duo, founded the first Black volunteer Fire Department in the\ncounty, after raising funds through community events. Thanks in part to a donation of land in 1980 by Elizabeth Stone, and a donation of $50,000 from Cherokee county, the all-volunteer fire department was erected, opening its doors in January of 1982, making it the first African American Volunteer Fire Department in the State of Georgia. Charlie Ferguson served as the first Chairman of the Corporation, and Tony Ferguson became its first Fire Chief. When the county began experiencing rapid growth, the areas surrounding Pea Ridge and Nineteen were soon developed. As the communities developed with the county, they also fought to preserve their history. Residents worked together to successfully defeat a developer’s effort to relocate the graves from the Hickory Log Cemetery to make way for the construction of Riverstone Plaza.

History Cherokee is\ncommitted to creating meaningful and complete histories pertaining to Cherokee\nCounty’s Black population. The Black History committee is a group of volunteer\ncitizens who provide necessary feedback, ideas, and connections in order to\nhelp History Cherokee expand their narratives and become more diverse and\nrepresentative in their storytelling.

Through educational\ntools and programming they help to expand History Cherokee’s audience. Our\ngoals are:

To locate and obtain\nobjects of significance to the Black history of Cherokee County.
To act as a History\nCherokee advocate in the community.
Explore ways to\nexpand History Cherokee’s reach to underserved communities.
