This tour focuses on Black History in the two most populated\ncities in Cherokee County, Georgia — Canton and Woodstock. Most Black people\narrived in Cherokee County as enslaved laborers (the 1850 census lists 1,075\nenslaved people living in the county), and continued to reside in the county\npost emancipation, with many descendants still living in the County today. The\nmajority of the places mentioned on this tour span the 1920s through the 1980s; a reflection of History Cherokee's collections. This virtual tour provides a glimpse\ninto the lasting and impactful legacy that Black Cherokee County natives have\ncreated.

Born on June 18, 1890, educator Magnolia Thomas may be the single most influential Black woman in the history of Woodstock. A graduate of Spelman College, Magnolia Thomas taught in all Black schools in Canton, Toonigh, Bethel, Orange, and Hickory Flat. Never content with her education, she attended summer terms at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and traveled later in life to learn more about the nation at large. Deeply religious, “Miss Magnolia” as she was known, kept the books for several churches, including her own: Mount Olive Baptist Church. Students recall her ability to understand the learning capability of each student, and tailor lessons and homework that pushed each student to the limit of their capability.

In 1911, her older brother Robert Thomas purchased an acre and a half plot of land on Arnold Mill Road. Magnolia and her mother Caroline moved into the house at 108 Arnold Mill Road, which was only a block away from the Training School. Her home was rebuilt by the City of Woodstock, and converted to a restaurant named in her honor. Tragically, it was lost to a fire in 2008, but a reconstruction of the original home still sits at the site today. As the population of Woodstock was only 276 people according to the 1900 Census, churches did not have their own cemeteries, and so Enon served as the cemetery for the entire community, regardless of ethnicity. The cemetery was segregated, with separate sections for Black and white people, and this practice continues to this day, though no longer out of compulsion, but out of a desire of the departed to be buried in their family plot. There arose a need for a Black community closer to downtown Canton, and in the 1920s the area surrounding Crisler Street was developed for this purpose. Many tree stumps were left underneath the building foundations when the area was first developed, and the community therefore came to be called “Stumptown.” Originally a dirt road, Crisler Street was paved in 1949 by the City of Canton. Chamblee Street, later renamed Burge Street in honor of educators J.A. and Marie Burge, and the streets of Teasley and Roy make up the rest of Stumptown. Jefferson Circle, named for community member Fred Jefferson, was later added to the Stumptown community with the addition of a housing development.

At one time Stumptown had its own elementary school for grades one through seven, after which students attended high school in the Pea Ridge community, many of them walking the route daily in order to attend.

The residents of Stumptown played a significant role in the integration of Canton schools in the mid-1960s. The three Durham children all transferred from Ralph Bunche in 1965, Cynthia Anne to Cherokee High School, her brother Chuck and sister Shirley to Canton Elementary, both previously all-white schools. Another resident, Mary Young, became the first Black school teacher to teach in the integrated Cherokee Schools, at Canton Elementary.

The Canton Theatre began showing slides and playing silent movies as far back as 1911. During Segregation, Black patrons sat on the balcony while white patrons sat on the main floor. In the mid 1960s, a few brave young men, under the direction of Reverend Ralph Freeman of Hickory Log Baptist Church, entered the theater and watched the movie from the main floor in disregard of the segregation policy. Upon leaving, they were accosted by a hostile crowd which had gathered. Ozella Tanner, a quick-thinking resident of Stumptown, picked them up across the street from the entrance, and they were able to safely escape. The car they left behind was burned, and a tense night in all of Canton's Black communities ensued, with threats made and shots fired.

Located alongside Route 140, Pea Ridge was the first community established, in and around where Pea Ridge Road sits today. Originally called Keith’s Ridge, local legend says it came to be called Pea Ridge (sometimes spelled as one word, and other times as two words) because the soil was said to be so poor you could barely grow peas on it.

In 1872, Philip Keith and his uncle acquired a large parcel of land, later donating a portion of it to provide space for a school, a church, and a cemetery. The first to be completed was the school, named Hickory Log School as it was built from logs. It was followed by the Hickory Log Baptist Church, and then the Hickory Log Cemetery. During the 1950s and 60s, Pea Ridge had a nightclub, barbershop, gas station, and even its own volunteer fire department.

The Hickory Log School was eventually replaced with the Cherokee County Training School, which operated as both an elementary and high school. Students from Woodstock and other nearby communities attended the segregated school. The student body however felt that the term “training school” had negative undertones and petitioned to have the school renamed. Because of their organizing efforts, in 1961 the Cherokee County Training School was renamed the Ralph Bunche School, named for the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient. In 1963, the school’s basketball team won the Black State Championship for the State of Georgia. In more recent years, the Ralph Bunche School transitioned to a special needs center that includes a headstart pre-k program, and helped students with various special needs. Frankie Ferguson Shepherd, who was a pre-integration graduate of Ralph Bunche, was its first Black woman principal post-integration.

The Ralph Bunche School has shaped many successful Black students including athletes, musicians, teachers, and NASA Scientist, Dr. J. Marshall Shepherd.

In 1981, Charlie and Tony Ferguson, a\nfather and son duo, founded the first Black volunteer Fire Department in the\ncounty, after raising funds through community events. Thanks in part to a donation of land in 1980 by Elizabeth Stone, and a donation of $50,000 from Cherokee county, the all-volunteer fire department was erected, opening its doors in January of 1982, making it the first African American Volunteer Fire Department in the State of Georgia. Charlie Ferguson served as the first Chairman of the Corporation, and Tony Ferguson became its first Fire Chief. When the county began experiencing rapid growth, the areas surrounding Pea Ridge and Nineteen were soon developed. As the communities developed with the county, they also fought to preserve their history. Residents worked together to successfully defeat a developer’s effort to relocate the graves from the Hickory Log Cemetery to make way for the construction of Riverstone Plaza.
