Founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976, Habitat\nfor Humanity was an expansion of the mission and model of the Koinonia’s\nPartnership Housing Program in Sumter County. This house was built by\nvolunteers, helping to keep construction costs low and supporting community\nengagement. All Habitat houses are built for no profit and are sold to partner\nfamilies with no or below market interest rate mortgages. Habitat partner\nfamilies also contribute \"sweat equity\" by working alongside\nvolunteers to invest in their home or one for another family.

Both this house and Habitat for\nHumanity International are nearing their 50th Anniversary—the traditional\nminimum age for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places.\nHabitat now works in over 1,100 U.S. communities and 70 countries with programs\nin new construction, repairs, neighborhood revitalization, advocacy, and much\nmore. Habitat has inspired millions of people to volunteer for affordable\nhousing efforts, including longtime supporters President Carter and Rosalynn\nCarter. Since 1976, Habitat has helped more than 39 million people globally\nbuild or improve the place they call home. With headquarters now in Americus\nand Atlanta, Habitat continues to draw on its Koinonia and Sumter County\norigins for inspiration as one of the leading voices in affordable housing\nglobally.

Prather, a white physician, and the Junior Welfare League, a white women's organization, led fundraising efforts for this hospital.

In operation from 1923 until 1953, the \"Americus Colored Hospital\" was a rare place in the rural south open to serving Black patients and training Black doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and nurses. In 1953, opening of the segregated Americus-Sumter County Hospital on Forsyth Street (destroyed by the 2007 tornado) led to the sale of this property to the City Federation of Colored Women for use as the Americus Youth Center. During the Americus civil rights movement, the Americus Youth Center became one of several freedom libraries. These ranch houses on North Lee\nstreet represent a movement for partnership housing that emerged in 1968\nthrough the leadership of Koinonia Farms.

Established by Clarence Jordan in\n1942, Koinonia was founded as an interracial Christian commune and a living\ndemonstration of a faithful community. In the 1950s and 60s, Koinonia suffered\ngreat backlash from white segregationists in southwest Georgia, including\nthreats, bombings, and an economic boycott that lasted for years.

By the late 1960s, Clarence Jordan\nand Millard Fuller took Koinonia beyond the commune agricultural model. To\naddress what they saw as unacceptable housing conditions in nearby communities,\nthey began to conceptualize a revolutionary program that would build and sell\nhouses with a zero-interest mortgage with volunteer labor. This effort was a\npart of the broader “Fund for Humanity” vision, where land, housing, and\nindustry would be more justly distributed and accessible to all.

Koinonia Partner’s first houses were\nbuilt in two neighborhoods surrounding the farm. By the 1970s, though, building\nexpanded into Plains and Americus. These houses were built in 1977 on land\npurchased by Koinonia Partners from the City of Americus. The location—along a\nprimary road and adjacent to a public housing development—was not an accident.\nMillard Fuller wanted to show the difference between the city's public housing\nprogram and Koinonia Partner's mission. One, Fuller wanted people to see,\ncreated homeowners and built equity; the other created renters and merely\nextended intergenerational poverty.

These Koinonia Partners houses\npredated the first \"Habitat\" house in Americus by two years. And\nwhile Habitat for Humanity International would eventually build hundreds of\nthousands of houses around the world, Koinonia built nearly 200 in Sumter\nCounty. Both programs shared founders, and Habitat continues to embrace\nKoinania Partner’s original model and mission to uplift access to decent and\naffordable housing.

In the 1950s and 60s, Koinonia suffered\ngreat backlash from white segregationists in southwest Georgia, including\nthreats, bombings, and an economic boycott that lasted for years.\nBy the late 1960s, Clarence Jordan\nand Millard Fuller took Koinonia beyond the commune agricultural model. To\naddress what they saw as unacceptable housing conditions in nearby communities,\nthey began to conceptualize a revolutionary program that would build and sell\nhouses with a zero-interest mortgage with volunteer labor. This effort was a\npart of the broader “Fund for Humanity” vision, where land, housing, and\nindustry would be more justly distributed and accessible to all. \nKoinonia Partner’s first houses were\nbuilt in two neighborhoods surrounding the farm. By the 1970s, though, building\nexpanded into Plains and Americus. These houses were built in 1977 on land\npurchased by Koinonia Partners from the City of Americus. The location—along a\nprimary road and adjacent to a public housing development—was not an accident.\nMillard Fuller wanted to show the difference between the city's public housing\nprogram and Koinonia Partner's mission. One, Fuller wanted people to see,\ncreated homeowners and built equity; the other created renters and merely\nextended intergenerational poverty.\nThese Koinonia Partners houses\npredated the first \"Habitat\" house in Americus by two years. And\nwhile Habitat for Humanity International would eventually build hundreds of\nthousands of houses around the world, Koinonia built nearly 200 in Sumter\nCounty. These three shotgun houses, built\nca. 1910, on Ashby Street are a reminder of the McCoy Hill neighborhood in\nAmericus. Public schooling in Georgia began\nduring the Reconstruction era following the U.S. Civil War. An Americus High School opened at\nthis site during the Great Depression, but the original campus burned in\nJanuary 1964. Integration coincided with a decade of significant athletic accomplishment for\nthe Americus High Panthers. Following back-to-back state AA championships under\nthe leadership of Alton Shell and Doug Parrish, the National Sports News\nService ranked Americus High the second-best team in the United States. The\nPanthers went on to win five state championships in football and a total of 29 state championships in six sports.

There were 2,498 Lustron\nhouses in the country and 22 built in Georgia. This is an example of the\n\"Lustron Westchester Deluxe model that featured two bedrooms,\nporcelain-enameled steel panels, porcelain-enameled roof shingles, and built-in\nsteel furniture. There are built-in sliding doors to conserve space entering\nbedrooms and closets.

Ancient Greece was a malleable symbol for a\ndemocratic republic. Americans could infer the ideals of Athenian democracy and\ndraw an imagined lineage through the architecture to the United States. The\nidolization of Ancient Greece, a slave-owning society itself, also served as a\njustification for the start contrast between slavery and freedom in antebellum\nAmerica.

Charles Malone owned this one-story\nGreek Revival house as well as a plantation near what was then called the\nPlains of Dura (Plains today). Malone’s full estate in 1860 amounted to\n$67,000, about 50% of which was in the form of human property. Twenty-seven\nenslaved people worked for Malone on his plantation and in this house. It is\nvery likely that enslaved people built this house.

Americus once had multiple nineteenth-century examples of this architecture from the nineteenth century. This Carpenter Gothic house at 201 College Street is the last survivor.

This house reflects the transition of Americus from a courthouse town into a growing city with the arrival of the first railroad and newspaper in 1854. C J. Malone, who lived around the corner in a Greek Revival house, offered this house to Amanda Hancock, who had family roots to the area, and Charles W. Hancock–who was recruited to start the first newspaper in Americus, the Sumter Republican.

Stop 1. Saddlebag Houses (1880s)

Randolph Alley was a busy place in\nthe late-nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the 1880s, the city's\npopulation nearly doubled and, in a corresponding construction boom, much of\nthe iconic Victorian architecture fell into place in Americus. During a wave of national railroad construction and amid\nconflict between Americus and existing railroad companies, Samuel Hugh Hawkins\norganized local investors to create the Americus, Preston, & Lumpkin\nRailroad in 1884—rechartered as the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery (SAM)\nRailway in 1888. The railway contributed to a period of rapid local growth as\nwell as the emergence of new towns, including Cordele, Leslie, and Plains.

As was common in the\nboom-and-bust economic cycles of the nineteenth century, the SAM Railway did\nnot last for long. In December 1892, the same year the Windsor Hotel opened,\nthe railway faced a financial crisis that became known nationally as the Panic\nof 1893. By 1900, the Seaboard Air Line owned the old SAM Railway.

These two-room houses are called\n\"saddlebag\" buildings because of the location of a double-facing\nchimney that heats both rooms. These simple buildings—built in the\nlate-nineteenth century—were almost identical to common plantation quarters\nthroughout the nineteenth century. Survivors of slavery, and their children and\ngrandchildren, often lived in houses that closely resembled the antebellum era.

These houses, packed close\ntogether, extended all down Randolph Street toward Jackson Street. In 1921, the\nfirst year the city directory recorded the residents of Randolph Street, this\nstreet had eleven houses. It listed China Rood (laborer), Maggie McCollum\n(laundress), Lewis McCorkle (laborer), Shade Murray (laborer), Addie Simpson\n(laundress), Marshall Harris (laborer), David Dixon (porter), Margaret Baty\n(laundress), Henry Knowlton (carpenter), Lucile Floyd (domestic), and Walter\nDudley (laborer) as the heads-of-household on this street. All of the residents\nof this street were African American. Some who lived on this street worked for the\nrailroad; others worked in the nearby white houses.

Once a common feature in\nAmericus and Sumter County, saddlebag houses are perhaps the most endangered\nbuilding types in the region. Although these houses on Randolph Street were\ninhabited until the 1990s, very few people in southwest Georgia live in saddlebag\nhouses today.
