Kumbayah on the Sankofa Driving\nTrail!

\n\n

Sankofa is an African word that\nmeans Go back and fetch it. \"It\" is an awareness of\nfamily, history, culture, photographs, and memories of sights, taste, touch,\nsmells, and sounds of African American-Geechee people in Liberty County.

\n\n

The Sankofa Driving Trail will take you to fourteen significant\ncultural and historical sites in East Liberty County. We hope to encourage\nmore heritage preservation in the first county in America named for “Liberty”. The\nhistorical and cultural sites on this driving trail have been selected by\nSankofa based on the story, architecture, community relevance, and\naccessibility. Each may be in varying conditions. However, they represent\nthe dignity, resilience, courage, and perseverance of African\nAmerican-Geechee people over time.

\n\n

From the founding of St. John's Parish in the 1750's to the American\nRevolution, and from the Civil War to Civil Rights, East Liberty County\ncontains the richest African American-Geechee cultural heritage in Coastal\nGeorgia! Communities like Freedman Grove, Cay Creek, Holmestown, Trade Hill,\nSeabrook, Briar Bay, Retreat, and The Grove have embraced progress\nwhile managing to maintain those indelible and important\nconnections to the past and Africa. These descendant communities embody\nancestral folkways, foodways, language, generational lands and family histories that\nare interwoven into historic institutions and natural spaces like schools,\nchurches, cemeteries, burial insurance clubs, and fraternal organizations.\nKumbayah!

This program, ran here from 1961 to 1970, worked toward attaining equality for blacks in the American South by teaching them their rights and helping them acquire the knowledge necessary to become registered voters by passing the required test. The dormitory building was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2006 for its later role in the American civil rights movement, and for its association with activist Septima Poinsette Clark, who oversaw the education program. William McKinley Walthour, Sr. founded the Union Brotherhood Society or “The Society” in March 1932 to help provide for the proper burial of African American citizens. During this period of segregation and Jim Crow laws, African Americans were uninsured and had to use homemade pine boxes to bury their loved ones. The organization collected dues of ten and twenty-five cents monthly from its members enabling them to have death and health benefits of $140.00 and sickness benefits of $10.00. At funerals, the Society members dressed in black and white, wore badges and greeted each other as “Brother” and “Sister”. Anniversary celebrations, known as the “Society Turning Out,” had a worship program followed by fellowship, fun, and games.

The founding members were: William Walthour, Sr., Frank Baker, Willie Screven, Joe Dowers, Wilhemina Walthour, Beatrice Bowers, Gus Williams, Priscilla Maxwell, Rose Bell Roberts, Ben Maxwell, Sarah Jane Walthour, Joe Walthour, George Walthour, Sr., William Brown, Rev. R. W. Monroe and Janie Stevens. In 1932 a building was constructed at this location on less than one acre of land.

His work was highlighted in books such as Early Days of Coastal Georgia, The Afro-American Tradition in Decorative Arts, The Gullah People and Their African Heritage, Keep Your Head to the Sky: Interpreting African American Home Ground, and No Space Hidden:Status: Endangered",[134,346,330],{"_75":344,"_131":49,"_132":345},[],"Slide28.JPG","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/e5ecroom0xribm14a9qzi3j5bmn2?variant=desktop","cyrus-bowen-cemetery-folk-traditions",{"_104":372,"_101":23,"_131":49,"_143":144,"_145":-5,"_146":49,"_147":344,"_149":373,"_36":374,"_152":-5,"_153":154,"_155":344,"_156":157,"_158":159,"_75":344,"_161":49},{"_104":363,"_101":23,"_131":49,"_143":144,"_145":-5,"_146":49,"_147":364,"_149":365,"_36":366,"_152":-5,"_153":154,"_155":364,"_156":157,"_158":159,"_75":364,"_161":49},{"_104":350,"_101":142,"_131":49,"_143":351,"_145":-5,"_146":49,"_147":352,"_149":353,"_36":354,"_152":-5,"_153":355,"_155":352,"_156":157,"_158":356,"_75":357,"_161":49},459,1125,"sunbury_mbc_original_building.jpg",{"_162":358,"_164":359,"_166":360,"_168":361,"_170":362},531,225,563,"sunbury mbc original building.jpg","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/shduhm4dl3w8oi4rrl69eq7h1rl8","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/shduhm4dl3w8oi4rrl69eq7h1rl8?variant=mobile","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/shduhm4dl3w8oi4rrl69eq7h1rl8?variant=tablet","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/shduhm4dl3w8oi4rrl69eq7h1rl8?variant=desktop","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/shduhm4dl3w8oi4rrl69eq7h1rl8?variant=lqip",413,"Slide27.JPG",{"_162":367,"_164":368,"_166":369,"_168":370,"_170":371},481,"https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/utvpxw0sqzk585iskg3hwgy3lsoe","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/utvpxw0sqzk585iskg3hwgy3lsoe?variant=mobile","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/utvpxw0sqzk585iskg3hwgy3lsoe?variant=tablet","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/utvpxw0sqzk585iskg3hwgy3lsoe?variant=desktop","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/utvpxw0sqzk585iskg3hwgy3lsoe?variant=lqip",412,{"_162":375,"_164":376,"_166":377,"_168":345,"_170":378},480,"https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/e5ecroom0xribm14a9qzi3j5bmn2","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/e5ecroom0xribm14a9qzi3j5bmn2?variant=mobile","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/e5ecroom0xribm14a9qzi3j5bmn2?variant=tablet","https://api.opentour.site/georgia-humanities/v4/public/media/e5ecroom0xribm14a9qzi3j5bmn2?variant=lqip",101,"sunbury-missionary-baptist-church-cemetery-g","Sunbury Missionary Baptist Church/Cemetery (G)",{"_36":329,"_66":330,"_75":331},10,{"_36":448,"_66":449,"_75":450},"512 Trade Hill Rd, Midway, Georgia","Historic Sunbury Missionary Baptist Church is an active sacred place. Gibbons Memorial Cemetery is an active cemetery. It is the legacy of Eli Esau Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons was one of the first African American men in Liberty County to work on the construction of Fort Stewart. After the military base was completed, he purchased a significant amount of acreage in Midway, Georgia and took to farming vegetables for his family and the community. He never sold any of his vegetables; instead, he gave his produce away to people in need.

The property of Gibbons Memorial Cemetery was purchased in 1976 when Mr. Gibbons, a devout Seventh-day Adventist who attended church in Savannah, Georgia determined that when his time to die came he would be buried closer to his home in Midway, Georgia. He and his wife, Drucilla Maud Monroe Gibbons, a school teacher, purchased a few acres for the purpose of starting a family cemetery. However, shortly thereafter he authorized it to become a community cemetery when Community Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery located in the Cay Creek Community had begun to flood. The church relocated to Highway 84/E. Oglethorpe Hwy and residents and began burying their loved ones there. Mr. Gibbons charged $50 per burial plot. Gibbons Memorial Cemetery is an active cemetery that is managed by the descendants of Mr. Eli Esau Gibbons.

Enslaved Africans accompanied the Dorchester Puritans settlers from Dorchester, Massachusetts and later Dorchester, South Carolinain 1754. These settlers were the first planters in Liberty County. They established the Midway Meeting House. Many of their slaves were listed in the Church Minutes as communicants and attended worship services in the slave gallery. Susie Baker King Taylor is known for her courage. During the American Civil War, she escaped slavery from the Grest Plantation which included Isle of Wight and Dr. Lyman Hall's \"Hall's Knoll\" property. After the War, she returned to Georgia and opened three independent schools: two schools in Savannah and the school which was once on this site (1866-1868). Desiring to return to urban life in Savannah, she left her school in the care of school teacher Mrs. Susan Carrier. In 1879 she migrated to Boston, Massachusetts where she wrote and self-published her memoir, Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Colored Troops. The site is marked by a gazebo and historical marker in honor of Dr. Lyman hall. Click here for more information about Dr. Lyman Hall.

The Lambright House is recognized for it architectural significance and surrounding farmland. In the Freedman Grove and Limerick communities, Miss Rosa Anna Lambright was a beloved public school teacher during the early Jim Crow ('separate but equal) era in the American South. At the two-room Free Branch (Colored) School, she taught 1st through 3rd grades while Mrs. M. Baker taught 4th through 5th grades. She was the daughter of Peter and Susan A. Houston Lambright. Like many families in Freedman Grove and Limerick, they were devout communicants at 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. They were also neighbors to Rev. Quintin Ebenezer Primo, a native of British Guiana, West Indies and his wife, Alvira Wellington Primo, a native of Jamaica, West Indies. In 1956, Free Branch permanently closed it doors and its young scholars began attending Liberty County Elementary School. 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (P.C.U.S.) is an historic sacred place that organized in 1867. It began during Reconstruction as \"Williams Chapel\" in Freedman Grove. Rev. Joseph \"Uncle Joe\" Williams was the pastor while his daughter Ruth Ann Williams Grimes Bacon was its first teacher. The current structure, 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, was built by and named for Rev. Quintin Ebenezer Primo in 1914. His son, Rev. Q.E. Primo, Jr. was born in Freedman Grove. He grew up to become the first African American bishop in the diocese of Chicago and Delaware. During Rev. Primo's tenure, several residents named their children \"Quintin\". Rev. Williams' grave marker is the lone one in a field across the street from the Church. The church and the cemetery are endangered.
