Sankofa is an African word that\nmeans Go back and fetch it. \"It\" is an awareness of\nfamily, history, culture, photographs, and memories of sights, taste, touch,\nsmells, and sounds of African American-Geechee people in Liberty County.

\n\n

The Sankofa Driving Trail will take you to fourteen significant\ncultural and historical sites in East Liberty County. We hope to encourage\nmore heritage preservation in the first county in America named for “Liberty”. The\nhistorical and cultural sites on this driving trail have been selected by\nSankofa based on the story, architecture, community relevance, and\naccessibility. Each may be in varying conditions. However, they represent\nthe dignity, resilience, courage, and perseverance of African\nAmerican-Geechee people over time.

From the founding of St. John's Parish in the 1750's to the American\nRevolution, and from the Civil War to Civil Rights, East Liberty County\ncontains the richest African American-Geechee cultural heritage in Coastal\nGeorgia! Communities like Freedman Grove, Cay Creek, Holmestown, Trade Hill,\nSeabrook, Briar Bay, Retreat, and The Grove have embraced progress\nwhile managing to maintain those indelible and important\nconnections to the past and Africa. These descendant communities embody\nancestral folkways, foodways, language, generational lands and family histories that\nare interwoven into historic institutions and natural spaces like schools,\nchurches, cemeteries, burial insurance clubs, and fraternal organizations.\nKumbayah!

The dormitory building was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2006 for its later role in the American civil rights movement, and for its association with activist Septima Poinsette Clark, who oversaw the education program. The campus, which includes several later buildings, is now a museum and research center. Dorchester Academy is a designated site on the National Civil Rights Trail.

William McKinley Walthour, Sr. founded the Union Brotherhood Society or “The Society” in March 1932 to help provide for the proper burial of African American citizens. During this period of segregation and Jim Crow laws, African Americans were uninsured and had to use homemade pine boxes to bury their loved ones. The organization collected dues of ten and twenty-five cents monthly from its members enabling them to have death and health benefits of $140.00 and sickness benefits of $10.00. At funerals, the Society members dressed in black and white, wore badges and greeted each other as “Brother” and “Sister”. Anniversary celebrations, known as the “Society Turning Out,” had a worship program followed by fellowship, fun, and games.

The founding members were: William Walthour, Sr., Frank Baker, Willie Screven, Joe Dowers, Wilhemina Walthour, Beatrice Bowers, Gus Williams, Priscilla Maxwell, Rose Bell Roberts, Ben Maxwell, Sarah Jane Walthour, Joe Walthour, George Walthour, Sr., William Brown, Rev. R. W. Monroe and Janie Stevens. In 1932 a building was constructed at this location on less than one acre of land.

Gibbons Memorial Cemetery is an active cemetery. It is the legacy of Eli Esau Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons was one of the first African American men in Liberty County to work on the construction of Fort Stewart. After the military base was completed, he purchased a significant amount of acreage in Midway, Georgia and took to farming vegetables for his family and the community. He never sold any of his vegetables; instead, he gave his produce away to people in need.

The property of Gibbons Memorial Cemetery was purchased in 1976 when Mr. Gibbons, a devout Seventh-day Adventist who attended church in Savannah, Georgia determined that when his time to die came he would be buried closer to his home in Midway, Georgia. He and his wife, Drucilla Maud Monroe Gibbons, a school teacher, purchased a few acres for the purpose of starting a family cemetery. However, shortly thereafter he authorized it to become a community cemetery when Community Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery located in the Cay Creek Community had begun to flood. The church relocated to Highway 84/E. Oglethorpe Hwy and residents and began burying their loved ones there. Mr. Gibbons charged $50 per burial plot. Gibbons Memorial Cemetery is an active cemetery that is managed by the descendants of Mr. Eli Esau Gibbons.

",31.7983509,-81.409856,[466],"Gibbons Memorial Cemetery is an active cemetery. It is the legacy of Eli Esau Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons was one of the first African American men in Liberty County to work on the construction of Fort Stewart. After the military base was completed, he purchased a significant amount of acreage in Midway, Georgia and took to farming vegetables for his family and the community. He never sold any of his vegetables; instead, he gave his produce away to people in need. The property of Gibbons Memorial Cemetery was purchased in 1976 when Mr. Gibbons, a devout Seventh-day Adventist who attended church in Savannah, Georgia determined that when his time to die came he would be buried closer to his home in Midway, Georgia. He and his wife, Drucilla Maud Monroe Gibbons, a school teacher, purchased a few acres for the purpose of starting a family cemetery. However, shortly thereafter he authorized it to become a community cemetery when Community Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery located in the Cay Creek Community had begun to flood. The church relocated to Highway 84/E. Oglethorpe Hwy and residents and began burying their loved ones there. Mr. Gibbons charged $50 per burial plot. Day Memorial Presbyterian Church organized from the mother church - Midway First Presbyterian Church in 1906. A wooden framed church, it was pastored by Rev. Alexander R. Wilson, an early graduate A.B. of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania - a historically black college. In 1882, Rev. Wilson earned an S. T. B. (Bachelor of Sacred Text) from Lincoln University. The congregation initially met at the Delegal Fork School and services were conducted in this school until 1910. With funds donated by John C. Day, a northern philanthropist, able-bodied male congregants built Day Memorial Presbyterian Church. As was customary, a burial ground was formed behind the church. Rev. Wilson pastored this church from 1910 until his death in 1917. He is buried in the Day Memorial Cemetery. A tree trunk monument stands erected in the front area of the church in memory of him.

During the American Civil War, she escaped slavery from the Grest Plantation which included Isle of Wight and Dr. Lyman Hall's \"Hall's Knoll\" property. After the War, she returned to Georgia and opened three independent schools: two schools in Savannah and the school which was once on this site (1866-1868). Desiring to return to urban life in Savannah, she left her school in the care of school teacher Mrs. Susan Carrier. In 1879 she migrated to Boston, Massachusetts where she wrote and self-published her memoir, Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Colored Troops. He graduated from Biddle University (now Johnson C. Smith University) and received his medical degree in 1915 from Meharry Medical College. He began practice in Savannah in 1916. He also held a practice in Freedman Grove. He was one of the first Gullah Geechee physicians to serve black communities in coastal Georgia. Dr. Frazier passed away in 1961, but his house continued to be used as a residence and also as a small business. 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (P.C.U.S.) is an historic sacred place that organized in 1867. It began during Reconstruction as \"Williams Chapel\" in Freedman Grove. Rev. Joseph \"Uncle Joe\" Williams was the pastor while his daughter Ruth Ann Williams Grimes Bacon was its first teacher. The current structure, 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, was built by and named for Rev. Quintin Ebenezer Primo in 1914. His son, Rev. Q.E. Primo, Jr. was born in Freedman Grove. He grew up to become the first African American bishop in the diocese of Chicago and Delaware. During Rev. Primo's tenure, several residents named their children \"Quintin\". Rev. Williams' grave marker is the lone one in a field across the street from the Church. The church and the cemetery are endangered.

The current structure, 2nd Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, was built by and named for Rev. Quintin Ebenezer Primo in 1914. His son, Rev. Q. E. Primo, Jr. was born in Freedman Grove. He grew up to become the first African American bishop in the diocese of Chicago and Delaware. During Rev. Primo's tenure, several residents named their children \"Quintin\". Rev. Williams' grave marker is the lone one in a field across the street from the Church. The church and the cemetery are endangered.
