The Touching Up Our Roots Digital Story Tour (or The #TUOR Project)\nis a self-guided audio tour featuring sites important to queer Atlanta in the\nlast fifty years. As a place-based, tangible queer public heritage project, #TUOR\naims to entertain, inform, and invite conversation around the sites and\nstories, places and people important to the development of LGBTQIA+ Atlanta. Using\nTouching Up Our Roots coordinator Dave Hayward’s previous live story tour\nroutes as a blueprint, the four tour routes currently completed loosely align with the period\nof Hayward’s life in Atlanta (1971–2021) and feature sites chosen by him for\ninclusion. The four current routes are 1) Downtown, 2) Little Five Points, 3) the\nPonce de Leon corridor, 4) the Monroe Drive and Cheshire Bridge corridor. Please visit our website for more information (tuorqueeratlanta.org).

Though #TUOR remains a work in progress, we understand the intangible\npower such narratives of queer heritage hold for LGBTQIA+ individuals. As Ken Lustbader\nwrites, “Tangible,\nplace-based LGBTQ heritage has the power to provide both a visceral connection\nto what is often an unknown and invisible past and the intangible benefits of\npride, memory, identity, continuity, and community.”[1] We\nhope that you continue to hop on the proverbial #TUOR bus and return to the\nwebsite as the project evolves and the routes expand.

Why do\nwe call it “The #TUOR Project”? The simplest answer is that TUOR is an acronym\nfor Dave Hayward’s initiative Touching Up Our Roots (founded 2002). Hayward’s initiative\nhas a playful “tongue-in-cheek” name that we wanted to replicate with the name\nof the digital story tour. What better way to queer\na self-guided audio tour than to invite listeners to pronounce tour\nqueerly via the misspelling TU-OR? We hope that our queer\nmisspelling will catch on as more listeners hop on the #TUOR routes. Though you\nmay contact us directly, we invite you to share your own stories of sites on\nthe tour routes by using our name and tagging us (#TUOR) on your social\nplatforms.

Founded in 1976 by minister R. Lanier Clance, the First Existentialist Congregation of Atlanta (former the First Existentialist Church) is an independent congregation which celebrates interfaith and diverse perspectives throughout the city. The First Existentialist Congregation has historically deviated from conservative understandings of religion, gender, and sexuality. As such, the Congregation is one of the oldest religious institutions accepting of LGBTQ+ people in the city. Since its transition from a small house to a historic Black church building, the Congregation has hosted numerous events centering and supporting LGBTQ+ Atlantans.

The First Existentialist Congregation is currently involved in numerous social justice and historical recovery initiatives in Atlanta. More about these initiatives and the Congregation can be found on their website.

ALFA conducted meetings and events in locations across Atlanta, including Metropolitan Community Church, Tower Lounge, and Charis Books. Charis Books and More is one of the oldest independent feminist bookstores in the South. Founded in 1974 by feminists Linda Bryant and Barbara Borgman, Charis (Greek for \"gift\") Books quickly became a location for feminist literature, lesbian community meetings, and other local events. The Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance (ALFA) rented a house near Charis and became frequent collaborators with the bookstore until the group's disbandment in 1994. Originally located at 419 Moreland Avenue, Charis Books moved to Euclid Avenue in 1994. The store would remain in Little Five Points until 2019, when it moved to a historic home in Decatur. In 1996, the store founded Charis Circle, a nonprofit organization responsible for managing the social and political events which the store housed. Charis Books continues to operate in Atlanta and remains as one of the few independent feminist bookstores in the United States.

Charis Books is no longer located at its Moreland Avenue location and is currently found at 184 S. Candler St. in Decatur. More information about the store is available on their website.

Charis Books and More was the subject of a 2009 article in Emory University's journal Southern Spaces, written by historians Saralyn Chesnut, Amanda Gable, and Elizabeth Anderson.

Founded in 1979 by actors and directors Faye Allen and Del Hamilton, 7 Stages Theatre is a theatre house which presents works of social, political, and spiritual importance from around the world. Originally located on Moreland Avenue, 7 Stages moved to its present location at the Euclid Avenue Arts Center in 1987. In its over four decades, 7 Stages has produced well over 100 premieres on world, national, and regional levels.

Along with countless productions of pieces by world-renowned playwrights like Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht, 7 Stages produced works by numerous LGBTQ+ playwrights, many of whom called Atlanta home. Rebecca Ranson's Warren (1984) details the AIDS death of her friend Warren Johnston, a gay man. This play was one of the first in the country tackling the mounting crisis. Jim Grimsley is a gay playwright whose works, including Mr. Universe (1987) and Math and Aftermath (1988), often pull from his experiences with gender and sexuality in the South. Other LGBTQ+ playwrights and performances at Seven Stages include Tim Miller's Glory Box (2000), Holly Hughes' Preaching to the Perverted (2001), Susan Miller's My Left Breast (2007), and Topher Payne's Angry Fags (2013).

Now a prominent cultural institution in the city, 7 Stages Theatre continues to act as a space where LGBTQ+ art and thought can flourish. More about the theatre can be found on their website.

Southern Voice, colloquially referred to as “SoVo,” was an LGBTQ+ newspaper for people across Atlanta and the rest of the South. Beginning in 1988 and lasting until 2010, this newspaper provided information on the AIDS crisis, local LGBTQ+ events, discrimination, marriage equality, and other such issues that were either ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media sources at the time. With over 100,000 weekly readers at its peak, SoVo was the most widely distributed LGBTQ+ newspaper in the region. Window Media, Southern Voice’s publishing company, closed down in 2009, leading to the closure of SoVo a year later in December of 2010. Archived issues Southern Voice are available through Kennesaw State University and the Digital Library of Georgia.

At the same time of the closure of Southern Voice, many of its editors (including its founder, the journalist Chris Cash) formed The Georgia Voice, a similar LGBTQ+ newspaper which filled the gap left by SoVo’s end. The Georgia Voice, like its predecessor, reports on LGBTQ news and events across Atlanta and the South at large. The newspaper also publishes “Destination: Gay Atlanta,” the official guide to LGBTQ tourism in the city. The Georgia Voice is available in print and online.

The Horizon Theatre is a contemporary theatre house founded in 1983, specializing in modern productions from across the world and Atlanta specifically. Horizon Theatre additionally produces numerous community and outdoor theatre events that cater to a wide audience across the city. Horizon Theatre has a long history of producing plays by LGBTQ+ authors and/or engaging LGBTQ+ themes. Most recently, Horizon Theatre produced Love, M; a play about the AIDS crisis performed entirely over video calls; and The Cake, a stage play about a conservative baker commissioned to bake a cake for her lesbian friend's wedding.

Located in the same building as the Horizon Theatre is WRFG 89.3 Radio Free Georgia, a community radio station incorporated in 1971. Along with the newspaper Great Speckled Bird, Radio Free Georgia was one of the only media outlets regularly reporting on LGBTQ+ happenings in Atlanta in the 1970s. This reporting occasionally got Radio Free Georgia into trouble. In September of 1973, detectives from the Atlanta Civil Disturbance Unit reduced the station's ability to broadcast by alleging that the station had collaborated with \"subversive groups\" (as reported by the Great Speckled Bird). Thanks to the station's listener-subscription and donation structure, Radio Free Georgia was able to stay afloat and regain FCC approval a few months later. Radio Free Georgia continues to broadcast across Atlanta, prioritizing the voices and perspectives of groups typically excluded from broadcast media platforms.

Founded by gay theatre directors Chris Coleman and Harold Leaver in 1988, Actor's Express showcases works by culturally influential authors as well as rising contemporary playwrights. In addition to its two gay founders, Actor's Express' original acting company also consisted of multiple gay actors, most notably Theo Harness, who has continued to work with the theatre well into the 21st century. Since its debut, Actor's Express has produced countless shows by LGBTQ+ playwrights or featuring LGBTQ+ themes, including Tennessee Williams (Summer and Smoke), Alice Walker (The Color Purple), Dan Pruitt and Patrick Hutchinson (The Harvey Milk Show), Henry James (Turn of the Screw), and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch). During the summer of 1998, Actor's Express produced \"Six from the Rainbow: A Gay and Lesbian Play Festival,\" which contained six plays by Atlanta LGBTQ+ playwrights such as Rebecca Ranson and Jim Grimsley. Actor's Express moved in 1994 to the King Plow Arts Center in West Midtown.

Another theatre company, Dad's Garage, moved into the former Actors Express building upon its founding in 1995. Like Actor's Express, Dad's Garage features both contemporary and canonical theatre performances, many of which involved LGBTQ+ people in their content and creation. Some of the numerous LGBTQ+ plays and variety shows that Dad's Garage has produced include Ron Morris' Madonna Obsessive Support Group and multiple shows by the improv troupe Queeriety. Dad's Garage also funds a Diversity Scholarship, aimed towards the theatre education of underrepresented racial, sexual, gender, and class groups. In 2013, Dad's Garage moved out of Little Five Points to a repurposed church building in the Old Fourth Ward.
