With grounds connected to the American Civil War Battle of Ezra Church, the Coca-Cola empire, the Civil Rights movement, and Atlanta’s historic and urban expansion in general, Westview houses the stories of many ethnic groups – such as the Irish Travelers and Roma – as well as educators, scholars, historians, actors, singers, writers, and more, thereby illuminating a unique narrative about the city's foundations, evolution, and citizens. In addition to Westview's 130,000+ residents, the property is a repository of art, including monuments, sculptures, and architecture. Enjoy this virtual tour of some of the cemetery's more notable sites.

The 1890 Romanesque Revival gatehouse was designed by Walter T Downing. It originally had a superintendent’s office and restrooms as well as a bell to toll for the dead and summon ground’s workers to the telephone. Friends of Historic Westview Cemetery hopes to refurbish and reopen the gatehouse to contain a gift shop, museum, community room and restrooms.

The Receiving Vault was built in 1888. It held up to thirty-six bodies if the roads were not traversable for immediate burial. In 1945, the vault was permanently sealed because of the availability of temporary storage in Westview Abbey. Text on a tablet covering its doors was written by Atlanta historian Franklin Garrett. The text, however, isn’t entirely accurate in its portrayal of the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic and its effects upon the city. There are no cemetery records to indicate or support the mass storage of victims in the vault during the 1918 pandemic.

The Spanish Plateresque Westview Abbey was built by Asa Candler Jr., one of the sons of Coca-Cola Co. founder Asa Candler Sr. The construction on the mausoleum, one of the largest in the country, started in 1943. It can hold 11,444 crypts and is covered by beautiful architecture, ornamentation, and art. The east exterior of the mausoleum is flanked with seals of the State of Georgia as well as the City of Atlanta. Most of the third floor remains unfinished.

One of the most prominent aspects of the abbey is its Spanish Gothic-styled chapel, which was meant to be used for weddings, christenings and funerals. The ceiling of the chapel is fan vaulted and four six-foot-tall chandeliers hang down from it.

The mausoleum has been used in many films and television shows, including Fast & Furious 7, Ozark, and Constantine.

Attached to the mausoleum in an administration building is an unfinished mortuary. While a mortician lived on site, briefly, he was never able to practice here; a law was passed in 1951 that banned morticians from operating within a cemetery.

Both the administration building and the mausoleum were designed by architect Clarence Lee Jay and mausoleum builder Cecil E. Bryan.

While a mortician lived on site, briefly, he was never able to practice here; a law was passed in 1951 that banned morticians from operating within a cemetery. Both the administration building and the mausoleum were designed by architect Clarence Lee Jay and mausoleum builder Cecil E. Bryan. Made popular at Westview in the 1940-60s, memorial “gardens” were located around traditional sections within the cemetery. At the center of these “gardens” are marble statues usually of a biblical nature. In 1947, Asa Candler Jr. added an administration building to the base, which also housed his expansive animal trophy collection in one of the largest private trophy rooms in the country. It has since been torn down (and the taxidermic animals given to Fernbank), but the remnants of its inner core remain. The crenelated top of the tower resembles a medieval design.
